Posted on Jan 27, 2006 | by Staff

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (BP)--Jerry Vines will deliver his final sermon as pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., during the 10:20 a.m. worship service Sunday morning, Jan. 29.

A news conference with Vines will be held in the downtown church’s dining room at 9 a.m.

At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a multimedia presentation, “A Faithful Soldier,” will be presented as a tribute to Vines' life and ministry over the past 50 years. It will feature interviews with many who have been reached as a result of Vines' heart for evangelism.

Vines, 68, has been at the 28,000-member church since 1982 and was president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1988-90.

In an interview last May, Vines told Baptist Press that in retirement he plans to preach in churches and conferences across the country; speak in seminary chapels and classrooms; extend a helping hand to pastors; and write a book on the biblical account of creation.
